"THE PEOPLE'S CHAMP" DAVE DARLAND TAKES HOME 6K AT NO WAY OUT 40
By Jaime Gregory
April 02, 2011-Vernon, IN- Saturday night Twin Cities Raceway Park hosted the highest paying sprint race the track has ever
seen. A record number of sprint cars were on hand for the 3rd Annual No Way Out 40. Each of the forty-eight sprint drivers
that rolled into the pit area had the determination in their eyes for the $6,000 track promoter Mason Fleetwood was about to
hand out. This year's event was a tribute race to last year's No Way Out 40 champion, the late Jesse "The Rocket" Hockett.
The night started out with one lap of qualifying for each of the forty-eight sprints then straight into heat races. Hunter
Schuerenberg looked to be the car to beat showing the crowd he meant business with his qualifying time being almost a half of a
second over the rest of the field. Shuerenberg led heat number one from start to finish with Jon Stanborough and Shane Cottle
battling it out behind him for second place. Stonborough claimed the second spot and Cottle held on for the final transfer spot.
Heat number two started out with a pair of Brady's on the front row to lead the pack. Brady Bacon and Brady Short showed the
fans what they wanted to see with a close battle for the lead the entire heat. Bacon came out on top followed by Short and
rounding out the top three was Robert Ballou. Heat number three saw Dave Darland, Levi Jones and Jonathan Hendrick take
the top three transfer spots. Heat four transfer cars were Damion Gardner, Chris Windom and Scottie Weir. The final heat of
the sprint cars took Justin Marvel, Shawn Westerfeld and Bobby East to the big dance. The first of three consies was red
flagged on the first lap with one of the cars getting crossed up in the middle of turns one and two and the end result being four
cars flipping down the backstretch. Once the wreckage was cleaned up, it was green flag racing the remaining twelve laps.
Dickie Gaines and Jon Siscoe were the transfer cars. The remaining two consies would be caution free with Bryan Clauson,
Casey Riggs, Jerry Coons Jr. and Blake Fitzpatrick moving on to fill the twenty-one car field.
With the field set for forty laps of heart pounding action, all twenty-one cars were fired off and ready to go racing. The feature
line up would just not be right if on the parade lap the pole was not left open. So with the field showing their respect and with
knowing Jesse Hockett was looking down on them wanting them to continue on his legacy, Schuerenberg dropped back one row
leaving the pole position open for the missing man formation. Hockett was leading the pack from above. With this race being
one of the last ones many was able to see Hockett race before his death in an unfortunate accident while working in his trailer
last year getting ready to come back to Indiana, all the drivers were ready to win this one for him. Once the field was stacked
back up, all eyes were on chief starter Tony Ogle awaiting the drop of his green flag. Darland saw the advantage on the start
jumping out to the early lead with Schuerenberg not leaving him much realstate. Jones was also amongst the battle up front
from his eight place starting position. Stanborough wanted in on the mix as well. The first caution came out at lap thirteen with
East spinning in turn number two. With Darland an Schuerenberg still one and two, and Schuerenberg pulled off the racing
surface to his hot pit. Schuerenberg now had to fire from the tail of the field with twenty-seven laps remaining to see if he could
make it back to the front. This now put Jones behind Darland. At lap number sixteen Stanborough got back around Short to
take over the third position and at the half way lap take the second spot away from Jones. The two battled it out the remainder
of the race with a few car lengths of Darland. "The People's Champion" Dave Darland of Lincoln Indiana took home the
checkers and the $6,000 with Stanborough, Jones, Short, and Cottle rounding out the top five.
Twin Cities Raceway Park will be off April 09 and 16, but will return to racing action on April 23 with Super Stocks, Pure Stocks,
Mini Stocks, Hornets and TQ's (non sanctioned).
