Clayton Perry Takes Win by a Bumper

By Jaime Gregory

Vernon, IN – August 15 – Saturday nights at Twin Cities are always full of action packed racing
excitement, however the fans definitely got their money’s worth this Saturday during the UMP Super
Stock A-Main.  Nineteen entries would take to the three-eight's mile high banks, placing all cars in the A-
Main.  Of the nineteen entries, all nineteen of them were some of southern Indiana’s toughest
competitors.  In heat race action, North Vernon, IN’s, Tim Clark, would give the fans an exciting race with
himself and Alan Magner, also of North Vernon, competing almost side by side the entire heat race,
which would place the winner on the pole position of the A-Main.  When heat race number two rolled out
and chief starter Tony Fleetwood dropped his green flag, it looked as if North Vernon, IN’s William
Burton was going to take off and pull away from the rest of the pack.  Burton would get a fairly sizeable
lead until his motor expired on lap number three.  This would put another driver hailing from North
Vernon, Clayton Perry, to the point.
The A-Main would roll onto the track with Clark and Perry setting the pace for the twenty lap feature
event.  With the track being racy all night long, fans were in for one heck of a show.  At the drop of the
green flag, Clark would lead the pack on lap number one, but by lap two, Clark, Perry and Magner were
three wide for the lead.  Not only was the battle in the front three wide, but right behind them, Bedford, IN’
s Brad Cummings, Columbus, IN’s Chris Deweese and North Vernon, IN’s Greg Owens were three wide
right behind the leaders.  Meanwhile back up front Clark would have the slight advantage for laps one
through six with Perry having about a two inch advantage for laps seven through thirteen.  Magner
would poke the nose of his car in front for lap number fourteen, but not have that advantage for long as
on lap fifteen, Clark would get a little more momentum running the middle of the racing surface and take
back over the lead until caution number one would fly at lap seventeen with a car spinning. Race fans
were on their feet with three laps remaining.  The green flag would fly and once again Clark, Perry and
Magner were three wide.  Magner would have the advantage for laps eighteen and nineteen.  As the
three pushed their cars to the absolute limit coming out of turn number four still three wide, Perry would
go to the bottom side and take home the checkers by less than a nose piece length.  Magner would
come home second and Clark would claim third.  Owens and Deweese would round out the top five.
Track promoter Mason Fleetwood was just as excited watching this race as the fans were.  It was
noted as being one of the best super stock races he had ever seen.  Racing action will return to Twin
Cities Raceway Park next week with UMRA TQ Midgets, UMP Pure Stocks, UMP Mini Stocks, Bombers,
Hornets and Cruisers.
